It has been a while since we’ve heard anything about the coveted Halo movie. Most of you are aware of the success that Halo 3 brought to Bungie Studios, creator of the trilogy. We heard a while ago that Halo: the Movie would be in the works, and everyone got extremely excited. I got so excited I kicked my dog! But, since the initial “confirmation” dating all the way back to 2004, we haven’t seen much happen at all. What the hell gives?
Halo: The Movie is something video game fans, and I say that boldly, are waiting for. The many reasons why its so waited for include that Halo is so widely known, and people are sick of the weird video game movie adaptations that we’ve seen in the past. However, I think people are also afraid that the past will come to haunt them with a crappy video game movie once again once Halo finally comes out. Is it because there haven’t been any really successful video game movie adaptations that the people that are behind the Halo movie are afraid to go through with it? I would say yes. Studios would have to be scared off their ass to be overtaking a project with this size. Anything below a sweet-ass of a movie would result in a failure.
The Halo community is very strong. They love their Halo and Bungie was very careful with creating the universe surrounding the game. A movie would have to be very true to the original interpretations, and any irregularity would cause ridiculousness, and mayhem in the community. Adaptation movies in the past only focused on the story line or plot involved, or they only focused on the characters and created a story to fit in with the characters. A Halo movie would have to do the same. Either they adapt the movie to the story’s plot, or they will use the characters and create a new story.
A Halo movie would likely be the latter; a new story based on the events in the Halo games and novels would make the most sense to do.
Bungie’s Halo universe is a lot like the George Lucas created Star Wars universe – there are hundreds of books and spin-off movies from the series, but they all fit somewhere. A Halo movie would certainly finally create that spin-off effect as well for Bungie. It would create a lot of opportunity to expand on and create more awesome Halo games and novels, and movies. We’re excited for the explosion of the Halo movie, but we’re still worried that it could also finally make the video game adaptations obsolete, and just a bad idea altogether…
Anyways, the Halo movie has been seen as a sitting-duck movie. Its development has been stunted, and original director Peter Jackson (who did the Lord of the Rings series) has bailed out. Since then, short-film director Neill Blomkamp has been contacted for the role of the movie director. We aren’t sure where the Halo movie is currently.
For your enjoyment, we’ve included a 9-minute short video called Halo Arms Race, which was done by the people at WETA, who creates the props and replica items for movies, and Neill Blomkamp.
