The first SUV-convertible... yes.

Nissan, based on some speculation and rumors (and a nice illustration shown on the right), might be releasing the 2011 Murano crossover SUV with a drop-top version also available. Cool, I guess, although I’m not sure what the point is. Who’s the market for this type of SUV?

Understanding that convertible sales are doing well, the Murano’s soft-top convertible will be alone among other SUVs; its the only car to actually offer such a feature. The only other SUV-type vehicle is the Jeep Wrangler, but even that won’t compete with the new Murano, the Jeep is a completely different vehicle.

The current Murano is really more of an upper-end SUV. It’s comfortable, and the engine isn’t that bad either offering up a 265-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, a reliable amount of power for the average needs of people. The convertible, however, could be quite costly — the topped-out 2009 Murano LE with all-wheel-drive has an MSRP of $39,080 and the convertible will probably be a price point above that. Reported by Edmunds.com.

What is this world coming to? Do we really need an SUV-crossover-type vehicle with a soft-top? What is the meaning of this ridiculousness. How can Nissan make some of the best decisions, and the worst? I feel like Nissan just wanted to do this “just because” they can. They might be trying to start something here, but I don’t think it will take off at all.
