Are there too many games in the wild? It seems like every day there is a new release of some B-list or low-budget game, and I feel this sort of behavior is saturating the gaming industry. Video games themselves seem to be revolutionary up until it got so big, everyone wanted to have the next big title. Is this a problem?

I’d say, yes, it is. Games aren’t that good anymore. With the example of yesterday’s release of Too Human, developer by Silicon Knights spent the last 3 years developing a game that was hyped up but delivered a mediocre product according to most reviews. Games are at a point where unless your title is different from others, it will not sell quite as much as the really big titles such as Grand Theft Auto and Halo, even Guitar Hero. All of those games all have some sort of a immersion factor – the digital world of the game engulfs you and makes you feel a part of the action.

We’re not comparing Halo to Too Human. However, we are looking to realize this line between a good and mediocre game, and a great game. The line is there, and most games don’t even come close to it anymore. It isn’t just the graphics either – its how the game is played as well.

If you take a look at an iPod you’ll notice that the menu’s aren’t cluttered, its easy to navigate, and you aren’t bombarded with useless information or worthless buttons. This same idea of streamlining can be applied to video games today. It seems that the bigger and better games are also the games that are more simple and aren’t bloated with weird features, but are still complex in story and immersion. The good games sort of have a message that tells a gamer “this is what you have to do, so do it,” and we’re pit up against opponents and we figure out how to get past obstacles.

Too many games don’t have the polish that gamers want. Sadly, hype and “screenshots” are what a lot of gamers determine to be a good game, but they are a lot more than that today. Some games need to get with the program. Either you make a good game, or get out. Gamers will get fatigued and tired of seeing the same games being reproduced.
