The Beijing Olympics have been amazing, right from the start with the amazing opening ceremony; the swimming events have been even more exceptional than any other olympic year. Why is this? Some kid by the name Michael Phelps has been snatching up all of the swimming gold medals! So far, he has won 5 out of the 8 medals he is currently after; and in Athens 2004 he took 6! What does this mean? He’s the best olympian in history. In fact, he also holds a few world records. Another “in fact” is that this year a record amount of world records are being broken.
There is a saying that goes like this: “You are only as good as your tools,” that relates to what is going on with olympic swimming. That is, some crazy technology that was introduced in Beijing this year has enabled these already amazing swimmers to be even better, especially Michael Phelps. One of the popular technologies is the LZR swimsuit researched by NASA, the Australian Institute of Sport, and ANSYS (engineering software company), for Speedo. Athletes wearing this suit have accumulated 35 world records and 135 medals (of all class) in the past 8 weeks since the beginning of the olympics in Beijing.
The suit is almost like something that came out of the space-age. Technically, it is, since it was developed by NASA and has 400 hours of water flume testing. Not to mention the feature about it being “fully bonded ultrasonically welded,” or it is seamless — not a bump or misshape about the suit exists. Other sweet features include “ultra lightweight, low drag, water repellent, fast drying fabric,” and the list continues into stats and other things.
The thing about the swimsuit is that, even when I think that people can’t really swim any faster without altering their body in any way, Speedo shows me up with the LZR, and simply astonishes people; even athletes can’t believe that they are suddenly more efficient in the water and more capable of swimming faster. These are the kind of products that make me jump out of my skin with excitement.
You can actually pre-order an LZR Racer swimsuit from SpeedoUSA.com, and it will only set you back about $550. No, it won’t fit your body quite like the althetes in the olympics because they get the customized-fit special treament. On the bright side, they will be available in October 2008.
