Any regular Halo fan has, by now, definitely heard of Bungie’s latest project title, Halo 3: Recon. It uses the same engine that was used in Halo 3, with some new swagger and shine, as well as a chance to play through new campaign levels as a new character. The game will even feature Halo 3-style multiplayer modes and achievements.

Details about the game are scarce as of yet, but Bungie doesn’t seem to want to keep this title quiet at all. You’ll get to play as an ODST (Orbital Drop-Shock Trooper) that is deployed during Halo 3 and the story will continue from this character’s point of view, rather than from the regular Master Chief hero.

I was starting to wonder what Bungie had under its sleeves, given the fact that they were silenced during this year’s E3 and have been quiet until now. Prior to that, I was worried that Halo 3 would be the last we saw of the utterly disappointing storyline, and downturn of the Halo franchise. Hopefully Bungie will be able to resurrect new hope for the Halo storyline, and offer fresh ideas for the new character.

One more thing, Bungie is no longer completely tied to Microsoft, so technically they can start offering games to fans on other gaming consoles, and expand outside of the Xbox 360. Halo 3 Recon will definitely be Xbox 360-exclusive, since it wouldn’t make sense for it to be on other consoles at this point, but we’re positive they may be creating other games that may be cross-platform in the future.

The trailer isn’t very revealing, but its definitely hype-worthy. The game will be out sometime Fall 2009. Better yet, Bungie has already started answering community questions about this game. Check out official updates at Bungie.net.

Update: Halo 3: Recon is now Halo 3: ODST. The name change better fits the game’s focus on the new character.

I hope this campaign story makes up for the lack of interesting that there was in Halo 3!
