Since we’ve been a part of Xbox Live since the day it came out in 2002, we can say that it is definitely the most powerful gaming platform. I’ve been looking at the PS3, and the Nintendo Wii, and can say that either of their online services is as expansive and seamless as Xbox Live. Finally, coming next month is the complete revamping of the service’s interface - is it still as amazing as it has been in the past?

My initial thoughts were no; I thought that Microsoft had reverted back to their buttholed ways of accomplishing only mediocrity and that I would be brought to tears by the new updates that they would be imposing.
Having this initial thought, I was ready to hand over my gamertag to Microsoft. Over the couple of months that followed their announcement, my opinions changed. Avatars are still a stupid, useless idea, but I like the way the windows look and are handled as well as the way media is driven to the userface.
Cute... right?
Xbox Live has a lot of media. You can download game demos, trailers, movies, a whole boatload of things from the service. The current interface doesn’t really allow all of this content to be easily seen and a lot of new users are really confused trying to figure out where everything is.
As the Xbox Live platform evolves, their interface must as well. Do I think this is the best way? Maybe, although I still don’t understand the dinky avatars! I don’t want to “beautify” my Xbox 360 with adorable avatars. I just want to watch what I want, and play what I want.
Putting that aside, the Xbox Live platform will be the most powerful available. Sony is trying to compete, but the PS3 interface is also showing its inability to scale with content. While the Nintendo Wii has the capability to offer movies and such through its interface, it is useless because it doesn’t play DVDs, and is more focused as a gaming machine, rather than an all around media device.
Microsoft, on the other had, has gone the mile and integraded entertainment and gaming into a really great interface. Perhaps users might be willing to pay for Xbox Live integration into their PS3s, or even Wiis. I want to see all of the consoles have the kind of availability of content like Xbox Live has. Hands down.
There is a great walkthrough video of the new interface, thanks to GameTrailers.com:

Fave This!
