Apple filed for a patent on multi-touch devices, and they recently were awarded the honors. They were able to get their patent for a device capable of…
…detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display, applying one or more heuristics to the one or more finger contacts to determine a command for the device, and processing the command.
Very nice, Apple, but will the company attack other companies who have been developing similar technology?
Palm’s increasingly popular Pre cell phone might be under the gun for this. Utilizing a new webOS platform with their own multi-touch capability, the feature is set to be one of the new phone’s strongest components. The Pre will be a direct competitor for Apple’s iPhone complete with many features such as email and instant messaging, and of course, applications and a growing developer community.
It would be a shame for Apple to bring down a great competing product with their newly acknowledged patent. There substantial reason to think that Apple will bring Palm into the hot seat and make some interesting demands against the Pre. Letting go of multi-touch capability will definitely cause problems for Palm and their upcoming phone.
