This movie completely crept up on me in terms of expectations. This movie is the most racist, hilarious, and frighteningly interesting story about an old senile guy that I have ever seen. Gran Torino is one of those movies that makes you think about your own life and sort of puts certain life-experiences into perspective.
“Relax zipperhead. I’m not gonna shoot you. I look down to her, if I was you. You know, I knew you were a dipshit the first time I ever saw you. Then I thought you were worse with women than stealing cars… toad,” says Walt Kowalski, a disgruntled Korean War veteran, the main character played by actor and director Clint Eastwood.
The movie has definite memorable lines, and a serious plot from start to finish. “Get off my lawn.” It offers perspectives of a different culture, and, of course, conflict between characters and these problems Walt faces with them. Walt decides to help the Hmong (Asian) kid that tries to steal his car (a very nice 1972 Gran Torino), who is son of the family that lives next door to him. He gets him a job, teaches him some great lines, “Excuse me Sir, I need a haircut, If you ain’t too busy, you old Italian son of a bitch prick barber,” and gets him more accustomed to being in the United States.
The greatest thing about this movie is that you aren’t forced into understanding it, and there isn’t tough symbolism to pick up on to enjoy the meaning behind the film. Its straight forward and serious. I have to say, it definitely makes me look forward to becoming a senile old man, and should definitely inspire you to become one as well. Check out the trailer, its great.
So, why should everyone see this movie? Not only do I want to use the lines from it, but everyone should see this sort of movie. Everyone is affected by racism and the growing multiculturalism of America. Besides, this is Clint’s last time acting.
