YouTube tries to capture TV audience

Following the official YouTube blog, they mention that their user-video service is eager to show up and become used on actual televisions. If you have a device with a browser such as a PS3 or Wii, there’s no doubt that you have already downloaded and watched some YouTube movies on your television. The dedicated page that is currently in beta, YouTube.com/tv, will bring you a more streamlined interface, larger fonts, and a simplified navigational experience while you are browsing video on your huge LCD. The YouTube blog says:

It makes watching YouTube on your TV as easy and intuitive as possible. Optional auto-play capability enables users to view related videos sequentially, emulating a traditional television experience. The TV Website is available internationally across 22 geographies and in over 12 languages.

The YouTube team is also working hard on getting support for their service in set-top boxes, such as TiVo and others, as well as working towards getting browsers built right into televisions. A major concern for everyone is that YouTube still isn’t making any money and must be costing Google mounds and mounds of bandwidth — add in television users and HD programming, and the bandwidth is phenominal.

Although… maybe this is part of some larger master plan to replace real cable television with the Internet. Who knows.
