Repo Men, a new movie about what happens when you do not pay for your credit-purchased organs on time, starring Jude Law (The Holiday), Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), and Academy Award winning Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), set to come out April 2nd, 2010 has made its first debut in one of the most bloody, filthy trailers to be released. We warn you, it is an R-rated trailer with cursing, short clip of a strip club, and a lot of blood:

Synopsis: Remy (Jude Law) and partner Jake (Forest Whitaker), who works as a repossession man for a company that sells its customers artificial organs. When its customers who buy on credit are not able to make payments, the repo men come after them. Their customers are hunted down for their organs with any means necessary. But when then they are caught, the repo men open them up and take back their hardware in a bloody, unsanitary surgery wherever they are. The story turns when Remy is forced into the organ transplant program after a nasty run-in, and cannot afford it. He becomes the hunted, and his partner turns on him for the commission.

The movie sounds unique, and I applaud the nasty trailer making a point that the movie will be gross. I am a sucker for all-out gore, and this movie has me salivating. The cast is impressive, and I can be sure that the movie will be worth seeing in theaters. I’ll be there to see this movie when it releases (April 2). Jay-Z, as a true hip-hop artist, has a lot of inspiration to work off of from the likes of New York City (Empire State of Mind, featuring Alicia Keys), and the faults of other rap artists, particularly for overusing a technique called auto-tuning (D.O.A. Death of Auto-Tune). His sounds are heavy at times, mixing various styles of simple computerized beats but also including softer instrumental parts using pianos and strings that make this music feel lively.

The album includes an array of accompanying artists that also help make the sound diverse, and look forward at his career and the world at hand. Musical appearances include Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Young Jeezy, Kid Cudi, Drake, and Kanye West who also helped produce the album.

Like the music, the album wasn’t produced by just one artist. While it is evident that Kanye West and Timbaland have taken the reigns, No I.D. have made an appearance in recognition of the more traditional rap style that Jay-Z is known for. The album is flowing with a lot of inferences and ideas pointing to the future of hip-hop and rap.

Lets put things into perspective. People still swear that vinyl still holds the quality that CDs cannot compare to. The music burned onto the CDs is compressed into zeros and ones and uses technology to interpret the data into playable music. A vinyl on the other hand requires sound physics that involves vibrating a little needle to produce sounds — this is sort of like a cricket in that they rub their legs together to make noise, the needle on a turntable rubs against grooves burned into the vinyl. A preamp takes the sound from the vibrations and amplifies the signal so that it is audible.

The physics involved in a vinyl makes more sense to connoisseurs of music, and more particularly audiophiles. The audible sound is fuller and genuine simply because it comes from actual vibrating material. Ask yourself this, what would sound better: making a crystal glass vibrate to produce noise, or listening to a computer replay a recording of that? I’d want to listen to the real thing (so to speak).

People are yearning for the kind of quality that Blu-Ray is able to offer videophiles. In the same sense, CDs have not even come close to the kind of uncompressed quality that vinyl has been able to produce for audiophiles. The same people who are buying top-quality Blu-Ray and high-definition music are probably looking into buying top-quality music, and vinyls are the fallback.

Future of Music

For one, Internet music is on the rise. With the amount of sales of iPods and similar devices, it should be clear that people do not want to buy media on CDs because they could get the same quality music from the Internet. If these consumers could get better, if not, equal quality compared to the vinyl, record companies wouldn’t be having such an odd problem of “technology fallback”.

Blank CDs that Look Like Vinyl?

The other factor to take into account is the uniqueness and nostalgic effects that vinyls hold. Vinyls are classical and hold actual meaning in comparison to the flavorless CD. You probably don’t own any hardware to burn your own records, which makes them a one-of-a-kind deal in your library. It shows your commitment to a band to own something not as mainstream as the CD. Each vinyl has its own personality of scratches and imperfections — people can refer to this as the live-effect. It is the imperfections that make the music feel live, as if you were listening to an orchestra and heard someone cough.

Selling uncompressed albums on the Internet would be fantastic for business. Currently, iTunes allows people to purchase songs at an upgraded compression quality. But the battle is strong against the all-physical vinyl records, and there is no saying if new technology is being developed to make CDs better. If DVDs were able to agree on new formats, why can’t music companies offer a new medium for bigger, better audio in the same on-the-go format? This doesn’t seem like too much to ask. Spice up music, because the industry is getting stale.

All Saints Day will bring its viewers along on a mission against the mob who has killed the MacManus brothers’ beloved priest. They make a bloody mess tracking down the culprits in Boston to bring them to justice once and for all. The movie will be familiar with a new plot and new action hoping to jibe with the cult of Boondock fans.

The cast will be very familiar, introducing only a few new characters along with the original actors who made the first movie as unique as it is, as well as a story by the original writer, Troy Duffy. Be sure to catch Boondock Saints 2 in theaters October 30.

Aliens landed on Earth years ago and have been disallowed by humans (governments) to leave the planet. They are placed in District 9, a holding camp for the aliens who no humans are allowed to interact with. Asking “Why can’t they leave?” is the key plot to the movie and it seems the aliens soon become frustrated and begin to do people harm in an effort to leave the planet. This is what I got from the trailer at least.

The movie looks to take a realistic approach, shot in a similar way to what Cloverfield felt like (sans the shaky cam). Visual effects and CG should also be quite awesome. District 9 definitely seems to be an all-in-all promising movie from the director of Lord of the Rings, coming out this August 14. Be sure to check back for more! Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

The game was first announced at E3 and there haven’t been many details released just yet. The reception of the game at E3 has been very warm, even becoming nominated as one of the most anticipated games from E3 for the PS3. This game has been delayed since last year, when the game developers took a different road by releasing a “Prologue” to Gran Turismo 5, and we are finally getting to see some completed sections and the game nearing release sometime this year.

From what we see, the developers of the game stay true to their franchise by planning to offer many aspects of racing through licensing agreements from NASCAR and the WRC. From the sounds of this, the game will engulf gamers with race culture from every angle.

The game also offers great visuals and, as always, the huge lineup of cars to sit in and vast amount of tracks to drive on. This game… looks… fantastic. The video below is testament to this:

Forza Motorsport 3 (X360)

The game has become the racing simulator for the Xbox and has evolved from nothing, into creating a great community of racers. Forza 2 offered quite a lot by allowing gamers to buy and sell cars at auction and had great tools for creating insane car paint. We can be sure the same features will be offered, and Forza 3 will be more refined and offer new tracks, cars, and other features that have yet been revealed.

So far big improvements in track offerings (since Forza 2 lacked in this area) and AI are to be strong points for gamers. On top of that, the developers have been working on “certifying” players’ track times. This means that cheating by having a faster car push, drafting another car, “riding walls,” or taking shortcuts is out of the question to get the best times on the Xbox Live leaderboards. Great!

The trailer for the game, while not nearly as exciting as GT5, is somewhat promising and we’re hoping that it doesn’t quite do the game justice.

Compelling Enough To Switch Sides?

Even if you own both PS3 and X360 consoles, it seems there will only be room for one game. Certainly, being a race aficionado and enthusiast, you’d want to be playing the best racing game even if it means you’d have to switch consoles to do it. Would you switch to get the best game (whichever it turns out to be)? Which do you think will come out on top?

Recently I have been glad that we don’t cover music. I honestly don’t think I would say anything good about any of (at least) the current top 10 songs in America. Its just noise these days.

People listen to music because it either sounds “good” to them, or they feel engaged with the lyrics. Boom Boom Pow, currently #1 on Billboard Hot 100 by the Black Eyed Peas tries to engage its listeners with their brilliant chorus:

Great. Really inspiring repetition of 3 words which don’t mean much; I think they are talking about someone’s badonkadonk (?). Hopefully Lady Gaga’s Love Games has something to offer as the #2 Billboard song.

Why are these artists constantly making shit up that doesn’t make sense? Then, when everyone hears it its common knowledge and we all know what it means. An example of this is “Jedi” one of the first movie words to make it into the dictionary (that I know of at least). Its things like this that bastardizes the English language. All this time I have been wondering why I can’t write well and the answer is clear… and the #3 song by Pitbull isn’t even in English, so screw that. This is Jeremih’s Birthday Sex, which does sound like a good deal.

The trend is sex. So far Black Eyed Peas wants some ass from Lady Gaga who will ride on Pitbull’s disco stick, and Jeremih, who is “feenin” (Urbandictionary.com definition) for any girl he can get. Or something. Onward!

The #5 by Jaimee Foxx, Blame It, talks about getting drunk and finding some girl who wasn’t as hot as she is now after having downed an apparent bottle of Patron or Grey Goose, fine alcohol. Should be good…

At the Microsoft press conference Konami’s Hideo Kojima briefly appeared to announce a new Metal Gear game that will, surprisingly, get released onto the Xbox 360 as well as the Sony’s PS3: Metal Gear Solid: Rising. A short trailer was debuted that showed Raiden as the main character for the game. While exciting that Microsoft is being considered for the new MGS title, it will not be exclusive. Konami clearly states that it has interest in developing games for both consoles.

The second game is Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, to be released onto the Sony PSP. It takes place after MGS 3 and puts you in control of Big Boss in Costa Rica as he prepares “his vision,” Outer Heaven. It is being called the “missing link in the Metal Gear Saga” by Kojima productions.

Terminator started off well, although it quickly fell into the “movies that have too many CG effects” category, and began to get stale the second time Arnold said “I’ll be back!” Granted, the movie looks sweet and true fans of the series should be very pleased, there is no doubt about that. But others just chiming in on the Terminator story might as well be tired of hearing about robots taking over the world. If you haven’t heard, zombies are the new “it” thing; robots are very much last year.

Putting that aside, Terminator has the fan base and audience that loves explosions to help it do well as a movie. The television series on Fox, however, was already canceled. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was into its second season when it got the axe, supposedly because the show failed to engage with new audiences as the plot thickened, and you simply had to have watched the show from the beginning to understand where it was going. I can’t say this is a sign of things to come for Salvation, but it’s likely that the audience that failed to care about the television show may be the audience that forgets about the movie as well. Not cool.

In the end, the movie comes out May 21st (today), for those of you who are going to watch it even without Arnold’s face in the picture. The final trailer, I might add, is hardcore awesome.

Daniel Craig’s hot performance in 007: Quantum of Solace may warrant a must buy status of the just released movie on BD. Already ranking #1 in Blu-ray movies on Amazon.com, we’d suggest picking up the movie while it lasts in stores or online.

If you are debating whether to buy Solace on BD or standard DVD, we say go for the high definition as it will be well worth the added sound quality and picture. The action sequences throughout the movie are worth considering going high-def alone. Quantum of Solace on Blu-ray is certainly the best addition to any Bond aficionado’s collection. Don’t settle for the standard DVD.

The very popular satellite-powered radio service, Sirius XM, may be getting ready for file for bankruptcy.

The two corporations, Sirius and XM merged earlier last year in hopes to finally cut costs and begin making actual profit. But, no such money was made and the company fears near death.

The news fell grim on me as I just paid for a year of XM service in my car. Those who are avid listeners may soon be forced into missing the staticless and broad amount of listening channels.

But, there is hope. DirecTV is looking to takeover the satellite radio business, and we sure hope they do (at least so I don’t have to eat a whole years worth of bought service). In the meantime, the company says that service will not be interrupted while they figure out what is to happen.

Buy-out, or bankruptcy? That is the question. I would certainly miss it if (when) its gone.

The plans are to release different levels of racing games for different types of gamers: one aimed at hardcore racing fans, a different game for casual gamers, and even an MMO game.

• Need for Speed: Nitro (Wii, DS) — The casual gamers’ entry into the NFS series of games. Will offer an in-depth story and a great amount of cars to juice up.
• Need for Speed: Shift (Xbox 360, PS3) — The enthusiast’s game, looking to get the hardcore racing fans by featuring realistic cockpit camera views and high-end performance cars.
• Need for Speed: World Online (PC) — A surprising move by EA, this game will be a free-to-play MMO game that will allow people to customize their cars and partake in various game modes. Free sounds good to me!

EA is trying to regain what it had lost from its previous “stinkers” of the NFS franchise. Remembering the days of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, gamers were enthralled by the simplicity of the game and range of tracks, cars, and even the ability to drive around as the police. Today, the games are rather dry and continuously focus on the “Need for Speed” crowd as opposed to others who are enthusiasts of racing and cars respectively.

We have high hopes that EA will brighten up the NFS franchise.

Watchmen is directed by Zack Snyder (of Dawn of the Dead and 300) and is written by David Hayter and Alex Tse. The film is an adaptation of Alan Moore’s highly acclaimed award winning graphic novel of the same name. Watchmen officially arrives in theaters everywhere on March 6th, 2009.
